Weekly Mixtape: 10-9-13 - Throwin Rocks & Dinner Rolls

It's been way too long since I posted a weekly mixtape. I apologize. I seem to do that every time I post one of these. But now that I have a ridiculous amount of free time, I'll be posting a lot more in general.

This weeks mix is a little different. Its a mix of Darkwave, Industrial, and I guess you could say Gothic "dark" Rock. Some of the bands are cheesy as hell looking. But I dig their music anyway. Look at KISS, GWAR or any other band that dresses up or has a certain visual aesthetic. And no...I don't put KISS and GWAR in the same category...I was just using them as examples of bands that have a very particular visual style.

This weeks list is probably not for everyone. Probably not even most of you. But I like to listen to a lot of different styles of music. And sometimes a list scratches a very particular itch.

Without further ado, this weeks mixtape: Whut the Goth?:

Why the Xbox One isn't Hitler...

For those of you living under a rock, Microsoft has been getting a lot of flack and hate this last week from the internet overall, due to honestly....a complete lack of communication and when communication does happen to occur, it's more about what the Xbox One can't do, then what it can and a general lack of customer-friendly vibes. After doing some research online, I've come to my own conclusions about the Xbox One and it's offerings. I hope you'll give the full article a read before you put the rage glasses back on.

Check out my Let's Play in the link below.

I'm making some Gears armor. Woooo!

Ever since I was a little kid, I've always enjoyed dressing up at Halloween and at any other time I could get away with it. Superman, Batman, the Ghostbusters, Boba Fett....Lion-O, you name it....I wanted to dress up as it for Halloween. My grandfather made it worse because he and a few of his old buddies used to do special fx makeup and made their own wild-western type movies. So he was really the inspiration for me to do film and prop-related work. He would help me do any kind of special makeup stuff or even help me build guns or other props.

Review: Star Trek: Into Darkness

I knew going into Star Trek: Into Darkness that I was going to be hyper critical about the film. I am a life long Star Trek fan, and have been watching the series for about 25 years. I know pretty much every episode of every series, and every film, back to front.

I know that in this film series, an alternate reality from the original franchise is represented. This was pretty much the entire point in the last film. It was written in such a way to both establish a brand new continuity, and maintain the integrity of the original franchise. Even so, there are certain concessions that have to be made in order to maintain the spirit of Star Trek.

Review: Daft Punk - Random Access Memories

The robotic duo has set standards for french house and techno in general since their first entry Homework, back in 1997. After their Alive album in 2007, things got quiet from the french house masters. It wasn't until Tron Legacy, released in 2010, that we heard new content from the robots in the form of a electric-symphony mash-up. Many thought they had retired or moved onto other things. Rumors began spreading on the internet like a wild fire that a new Daft Punk was in the works. Sure enough, it was confirmed by bass legend Nile Rodgers that he had been collaborating with the French duo on several tracks for a new album. Random Access Memories was born. Here is my review.

Feeling Verklempt?

It's Thursday night and I don't have a whole lot going on. So I'm turning my gaze into the future! The weekend is almost here! For myself at least, that means a reprieve from the salt mines and some much needed relaxation, gaming and hang-time with some good friends.

Mix-Tape Monday - Rock It Pt. 2 - 5/13/13

Here it is as promised. Mix Tape Monday's triumphant return with Part 2 of the Rock It! mix. This mix and part 1 are sort of special to me. These are all songs that have made some kind of impact on me growing up. I didn't really get to start listening to a lot of music until I was in high school and getting into college. The household I grew up in was just kind of closed off from the rest of the world. I had no idea who was good...I had never even really listened to Metallica until my late teens. Which I'm 31 now, and listen to almost everything. I take in whatever I can and try to keep up with the bands I enjoy, and always keeping an ear out for something new and awesome.

Oh Look! A Nintendo Themed Arcade Cabinet!

I'm a sucker for arcade machines. I grew up during the time when there was an arcade in every shopping mall. Even Walmart and local grocery stores had machines setup at their entrances. I would stay there popping quarters into those machines while my mother took care of her shopping.

Take a look at Imgur user mysterysmellyfeet's awesome creation after the break.

Corridor Digitals Mercs vs. Spies video is badass!

The good folks over at Corridor Digital have put together a pretty bad-ass short film about a lovable group of mercenaries being accosted by some spy-like riff raff. It makes for good film and good fun!

Check it out after the jump:

Mixtape Saturday - 5/11/13 - Rock it! Side A

Many apologies for not posting anything the last 2 weeks. I've had a lot of issues with work and have been in bit of a dark spot....depressed if you will.

Anyway. ONTO THE MUSIC!!!

Chainmail Comic Update

Hello Nerdgazm! Rottingblue here,

As a few of you may know, I'm in the process of drawing a comic titled Chainmail. It's a comic of the science fiction space faring sort, and I draw it on a fairly regular basis. I posted a short video time-lapse of myself completing this panel's final inks digitally. You can check it out here:

Stay classy.

Miiverse: Nintendo's Social Network

One of the most overlooked features of the Wii U by the video game media is Miiverse. Miiverse is a dedicated Wii U social network. The point of Miiverse is to pretty much talk about the games that you are playing, or are interested in on the Wii U.

Often times when I'm playing Wii U, I'll find myself distracted by Miiverse posts. It's funny, sometimes, I'll spend more time on Miiverse than in the actual game that I'm reading about. People often have unique and interesting things to say about the games that they are playing.

Miiverse has several unique features. The most notable one is the drawing tool. This tool is responsible for many, many talented artists posting on Miiverse. The results are often surprising, considering all of them were drawn on the Wii U Game Pad's touch pad. Among some of the most impressive are the pixel art done.
An example of some popular artwork form the Super Mario World page.

Another of the unique features of Miiverse is the ability to post screen shots of the game that you are playing. All you have to do is tap an icon on the screen to do this. This is helpful for people trying to ask for information about a particular part of the game, and it's fun to see the weird glitches that people sometimes find. Recently, I posted a screen shot about my death in Mega Man when I was literally a few steps from a life item.
Me bitching about dying in Mega Man.

For the posts themselves, you can do a couple of cool things. First, you can tag the post for spoilers. If your post is covering spoilers for the game, it will be tagged as such to other users, and conversely, if someone else tags spoilers, you won't be able to see their posts without your wanting to. You can also choose to see all posts tagged with spoilers on any particular game that you choose. Secondly, you can choose the emotion that you want to convey in the post. Since every post is made as if your Mii was speaking to the community, it displays this emotion on their faces.
Me joining a conversation about the difficulty of Classic vs. Contemporary Mario games.

You can also post 'Yeahs' which are like 'Likes' on Facebook. Sometimes, you will come across people begging for 'Yeahs', but when Nintendo deemed these people as an interruption to the service, they banned the practice. Sometimes, still, you'll see them buried within posts that contain actual content.

Miiverse is also tightly moderated by Nintendo. Only once in a while will you find content outside of the PG-13 range of intensity. When you do come across it, you can be sure that it won't remain there for long. Miiverse automatically filters certain words from the text input section. When you see inappropriate content, usually, it's in a drawn post. Users can report posts that violate the TOS agreement, as well as posts that contain spoilers, but aren't marked as such.

Miiverse also gives developers a way to communicate directly with their fans. Members of the community who are developers are authenticated by a green check at the corner of their Mii profile pic. Developers have already made use of Miiverse to chat with their fans, and to receive feedback. Gaijin Games used it to hear about glitches in Bit.Trip Runner 2 on the day of its release. Nintendo uses it to receive feedback, and to post news 'directly to you'. Miiverse was also, in part, instrumental in the decision to bring Earthbound to North American and European Virtual Console.

Recently, Nintendo made Miiverse available for users outside of Wii U. You can now access Miiverse from web browsers on PC and on smart phones. The interface is pretty much the same as on Wii U. For some reason, though, you aren't able to make new posts outside the Wii U. There is a problem with the fact that you can only post 100 characters at a time.  The browser version doesn't give you a counter, and if you go over the 100 mark, you have to just guess and keep cutting your post down to get to 100. You are also not able to create an account from the browser version. Your Miiverse information is tied to your Nintendo Network ID that you get when you create user data on the Wii U's system.

The very first thing that I did when I heard that it was released for browsers, was try to access Miiverse on my 3DS. I couldn't. I got a message saying that Miiverse was incompatible with my browser. This seriously baffled me. Why would I not be able to access this Nintendo exclusive network on another Nintendo device? I remember Nintendo saying that Miiverse would be coming to 3DS later, but it doesn't make sense that I can't access it from the 3DS's web browser. Just a minor gripe.

Miiverse really sets a standard for gaming social networking. It's really fun to talk to people about the games that you are playing. I'm really looking forward to see how it will be implemented in the future, and how it will act on the 3DS. In the meantime, I'll keep reading and posting.

Din's Curse: Demon War Game Review

Hello Nerdgazm! Rottingblue here.

I've uploaded a short review video to YouTube all about why YOU should be playing Din's Curse.

It's an amazing game that people seem to have forgotten about only three short years. The graphics are dated, but the gameplay is rock solid.

If you enjoy action RPG's like Diablo, or Torchlight, there's no reason you won't immediately fall in love with this underrated gem. It even has unlimited player Co-op! You read that correctly: Co-op dungeon delving goodness for you and every single one of your friends; at once! Check it out here:

Earthbound: Cult Classic

There are cult franchises in pretty much every medium of entertainment. Star Trek, Sailor Moon, KISS, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Metroid, and many more permeate our minds. These are franchises that aren't necessarily the most popular in the world, but the fans who follow them, do so with an almost religious, or cult like(see how that works) mentality.

Among video games, few franchises fit this idea more than the Mother/Earthbound series. In North America, there has only been one release, Mother 2, known as Earthbound in the US. It is one of the biggest cult phenomena in gaming.

It's Friday!

And I don't have a damn thing to post really. I've been going hard all week trying to come up with relevant content that will keep people coming back for more. Not an easy task. Especially for someone who works a nine to five job five days of the week, have hobbies and projects to work on, friends to hang with, Berserk manga chapters to read, artwork to make (yes I draw to), and is consistently ridiculously low on cash.

I like turtles....

Why, Activision? Why?

Well better question would be..Nickelodeon....why? Because these turtles are horrendous looking. The gameplay doesn't look bad, hell the game itself looks decent. But the art direction for the turtles just doesn't sit well with me.

Whose up for some Heaven Shall Burn?

Oooo me! Pick me! Pick meeeee!

New Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon gameplay hits the scene today.

This game looks ridiculous, and that's why I love it. It's not an expansion for Far Cry 3, it's a stand-alone title. BOSH!

Nintendo Financal 2012, Plus New NOA CEO

Nintendo has just released their financial data for 2012. After a particularly hard year, the company has returned to profit. After operating at a deficit of $530 million in 2011, Nintendo has posted a profit of a comparatively meager $71 million.

Part of their financial data also included life-to-date sales of all of their current market platforms. See the sales data after the break.

Movie Trailer Tuesday!

It's the first evah Movie Trailer Tuesday! Basically a collection of cool or interesting movie trailers I've seen on the internet from the past few days.

So let's get it going!

Pizza Time!

What kind of improvements can current generation game systems make? Tighter controls? Better graphics? More games? Better online interactions? Being able to order a pizza?

Wait, what? What's pizza got to do with video games? Well, it's absolutely a popular food selection for gamers. This is more or less true, especially with gamers who spend a lot of time playing. Ordering a pizza is easy, right? You used to have to just give them a call. You can now do it from your PC using your web browser, or your smart phone using apps. Well now, you can also use the inline app on your Xbox 360...

Dragon's Crown Officially has an Official Release Date.

Dragon's Crown finally has an official release date here in the U.S.! It's set to rock America on August 6th for both the PS3 for $50 and the PS Vita for $40. Sadly the cross play feature will not work between the PS3 and the Vita. Though you'll be able to transfer save date between the two.

Who else is looking forward to it?

Gears of War Judgment Call to Arms map pack released today!

Good news for all you gearheads out there that for some reason are still playing Gears of War Judgment. Or as I like to call it, Diet Gears of War Lite Zero.

Official trailer for Thor The Dark World

Here's the first official trailer for Thor: The Dark World. Coming in 2013 from Marvel Studios.

Thor is one of my favorite Marvel Studio films so far.

The Hazards of Next Generation Development

Sony has just recently announced the PlayStation4. Counting Nintendo's Wii U, it will be the second eighth generation game console. Sony is following the same business structure that they have since they entered the market. They're using the idea that sharper graphics, prettier pictures, and bigger games make the system.

New Man of Steel Trailer!

I know this has been up for a couple of days, but I haven't really seen it until today and thought I needed to share.

I'm pretty psyched for this movie.

Mix-Tape Monday - 4/22/13

A Word from the Big Cheese

Firstly, I'd like to thank you for taking the time to check out the site. There's not a lot of content up, but we're live now and content will be making it's way onto the site as the week progresses. Right now there are a few reviews, some weekly features that we are working on, and some original video content that's being tweaked and made ready for it's debut on the site. I'm pretty excited about it all.

My goal for Nerdgazm is simple. Provide news, articles and media about the things I love, and the things our contributing writers and artists love. We're all nerds here, and we want to celebrate the things we all love. From video games to bad japanese gore-horror flicks to comic books to new music releases. We're going to cover a lot of content down the road.

Like anything else, it's going to take a little time to build up a reputation and get this going. But I'm hopeful that word will spread and that we'll have something awesome and unique here at Nerdgazm.

We don't make money off of the site. No companies pay us to promote their products or services. So when we name or recommend something, you know it's real people promoting something because we genuinely like it. Not because some company paid us to.

We write and produce the content on Nerdgazm because it's what we want to do, and we enjoy it. And we hope that you will enjoy it and keep coming back to check us out and take part in our nerd ways with us.

Thanks again for checking us out, and I hope that as we create new content, you'll keep coming back for more.

NERD ON!

- The Drunken Viking

Get Lucky, my review of the new Daft Punk single

First off, I'm a huge Daft Punk fan. So this may get a little messy as I post about how friggin awesome this new track is. So watch out for those wet spots. Sorry.
